Northern mountain frozen as temperatures drop

Temperatures have continued falling, freezing several northern mountainous areas, including Phia Oac Mountain in Cao Bang Province.

On January 9, the temperature at the peak of Phia Oac Mountain was minus 3 degrees centigrade, bringing snow and frost.

For people who live near the mountain, this phenomenon is not strange, so they know how to protect themselves and their poultry from the bone-chilling cold.

Local schools pay more attention to their pupils’ health along with adjusting the time of the school day.

Located at 1,938 metres above the sea level, Phia Oac Moutain often sees snow every winter. In early 2016, the place saw the snow of 30-40 centimetres.

According to the information from Lao Cai Province’s Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting, temperatures fell to 2.8 degrees centigrade in mountainous areas in and around Sapa Town on January 10.

Centre Director Luu Minh Hai said that high mountainous areas in northern Vietnam such as Sapa, Y Ty, Bac Ha, Muong Khuong and Si Ma Cai would continue facing low temperatures until January 14.

The National Centre for Hydro-meteorology Forecast forecasted that due to being affected by this cold spell, low temperatures will be seen in areas that are 2,300 above the sea level and these places would experience sub-zero temperatures. Frost would continue to cover Fansipan and surrounding areas for at least two days.
