People in the Mekong Delta expect flooding season to earn their livelihood

On Saturday, water level started surging quickly in areas adjacent to Cambodia in Dong Thap province.

According to the National Hydro Meteorological Forecasting Center, it measured 2.33 meters at Tan Chau station in the Tien River and 1.95 meters at Chau Doc station in the Hau River, 0.2-0.3 meter higher than the same period last year.

The water level is forecast to continue rising and reach its peak of 2.9 meters at Tan Chau and 2.45 meters at Chau Doc on July 26 and 27, 0.5 meter higher than the same period last year. That is said a good signal for local residents.

Those living in coastal areas in Ca Mau, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang and Kien Giang provinces now can give a sigh of relief as they no longer face severe drought and salt penetration as they used to last year thanks to continuous rains and water flow from the Mekong River.

For the last few days, they have started catching linh fish (Siamese mud carp), a specialty of the flooding season in the Mekong Delta.
