Nearly 96% of National Assembly deputies are Communist Party members
VietNamNet Bridge – The National Assembly (NA) election results showed that members of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) accounted for 95.8% while non-Party membership deputies made up 4.2%, down 50% from the previous term.

A total 496 candidates have been elected to the 14th National Assembly after results of the elections held on May 22 were announced by the National Election Council (NEC) yesterday.

According to General Secretary of the National Assembly, Chief of the National Election Council – Mr. Nguyen Hanh Phuc, the total number of voters in the country is 67,485,480 and up to 67,049,200 people casttheir vote, reaching 99.35%.

Phuc said the total 14th NA candidates is 870 and 496 people won the election, four less than the ceiling number of NA deputies set by the Law on Organization of the National Assembly.

In particular, 182 out of 197 the candidates recommended by central agencies were successful at the pole, including 12 candidates of Party agencies, three of the Presidential agencies, 17 of the government, 1 of the Supreme People's Court, one of the Supreme People's Procuracy, 15 of the Ministry Defense, 3 of the Ministry of Public Securities, 104 of the NA agencies and 25 of the Vietnam Fatherland Front and its member organizations.

In term of structure, the number of NA deputies who are ethnic minority groups and women are four and 17 less than expected, respectively.

The NA deputies who are non-Party members account for 4.2%, down 4.2% compared to the previous term while the number of young deputies is 21 more than expected.

The number of re-elected deputies is equal to expectation but 1.1% reduced over the previous term while the number of self-nominated deputies has fallen 0.4 percent.

Notably, the election results at the polling station 2 in An Son commune of Kien Hai district, Kien Giang province was annulled because of serious law violations, and the election was re-conducted on June 5.

Regarding the results of election of deputies to the People's Council at all levels, according to the reports by 63 provinces and cities, 3,908 provincial candidates, 25,179 district-level candidates and 291,273 commune-level candidates won the election. In general, these numbers of deputies were less than expectation.

Resolution on general election results announced

The National Election Council on June 8 issued a resolution announcing the results of the election and the list of 496 newly-elected deputies to the 14th National Assembly.

The resolution is in line with Article 86 of the Law on the Election of Members of the NA and the People’s Councils.

The resolution was also announced at a press conference in Hanoi on June 9 which was chaired by NA Vice Chairman and member of the National Election Council Phung Quoc Hien and NA Secretary General Nguyen Hanh Phuc.

Tran Van Tuy, head of the NA Committee for Deputy Affairs, said more than 67 million constituents cast votes on May 22, or 99.35 percent.

The highest turnout was posted by the central province Thua Thien-Hue (99.99 percent) and the northern mountainous province of Yen Bai (99.98 percent).

Among 496 elected deputies, 86 are ethnic minorities, (fewer than the expected 90 but higher than the 13 th tenure’s 78), 133 are women (fewer than the expected 150 but higher than the 13 th tenure’s 122), 21 are non-Party members and 71 aged below 40.

As many as 160 NA deputies were re-elected, accounting for 32.3 percent.

Concluding the press conference, Hien said the election of deputies to the 14 th NA and the People’s Councils for 2016-2021 has been a success, ensuring democracy and fairness in a legal, economical manner and becoming a true festival of all people.

Following the announcement of results, the National Election Council will consider and deal with any complaints in line with the law and verify the qualifications of elected deputies who will report to the 14 th NA’s first meeting, he said.
