Over 100 firms join International Trade Fair of Northwest Region

More than 100 organisations and businesses of Vietnam, China, Laos and Thailand have joined the International Trade Fair of the Northwest Region 2019 that was opened in Dien Bien Phu city in the northwestern province of Dien Bien on March 30.

The event, which will run until April 5, has 280 booths introducing goods and services of different localities of Vietnam and foreign firms, along with a trading area and a food court.

On display at the fair are manufacturing-mechanical products, machines, industrial and agricultural equipment, office equipment, and handicrafts.

Le Van Quy, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Dien Bien province, said that the trade fair is part of the national trade promotion programme which has been approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The regional-level event is of important economic and political significance, aiming to promote the images and potential for socio-economic, trade, service, culture and tourism development of Dien Bien and other Vietnamese and foreign localities, he said.

Quy held that this is a good chance for Vietnamese firms to expand partnerships with their counterparts both at home and from northern areas of Laos and Thailand, and China’s Yunnan province, thus increasing exports.

On the occasion, the provincial People’s Committee recognized 14 industrial and agricultural products as the typical products of Dien Bien.

Vietnam Rubber Group taps 25,400 tonnes of latex in Cambodian province in 2018

The Vietnam Rubber Group (VRG) has reported that it tapped over 25,400 tonnes of rubber latex from its farms on a total area of 22.64ha in the Cambodian province of Kampong Thom in 2018. 

During a ceremony reviewing the VRG’s rubber tree planting project in the province on March 27, the group said its eight subsidiaries operating in Kampong Thom sold 25,766 tonnes of latex the same year, earning profit of more than 39.4 billion VND (1.7 million USD). 

The report said the Vietnamese rubber firms have contributed to generating jobs in the Cambodia province; building roads, schools, medical stations and water wells in the surrounding areas; and donated millions of USD to the Cambodian Red Cross. 

This year, the VRG will begin to harvest latex on some 31,000 ha of rubber trees and employ more than 6,500 workers in the country. 

Vietnamese Ambassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh asked provincial authorities to assist VRG in the supply of professional guards, allow the use of workers during weekends in line with Cambodia’s Labour Law, and check the legality of rubber latex points of sale near the project’s area, contributing to improving local economic growth. 

He also urged the province to provide all possible support for Vietnamese nationals in Tonle Sap, Kampong Thom province in conducting paper works to be employed by VRG.

Governor of Kampong Thom province Sok Lou pledged to deal with issues within his authority and report VRG’s proposals to leaders of Cambodian ministries and agencies concerned. 

Accordingly, Kampong Thom will hold meetings every three months with the Vietnamese rubber firms to review joint work and address any arising issues. 

Vietnam achieves nearly 99 percent electrification

Vietnam is one of the most efficient power markets in Southeast Asia, and has achieved nearly 99 percent electrification with relatively low cost in comparison to neighbouring country, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

The ministry shared the information at the Electrify Vietnam 2019 Conference held in Ho Chi Minh City on March 28.

According to Phan The Anh, deputy director of the MoIT’s Agency for Southern Affairs, power demand is forecasted to growth by more than 10 percent each year from now to the end of 2020 and by 8 percent annually during 2021-2030. Therefore, to satisfy the increasing demand, Vietnam will need 60,000 MW of electricity by 2020, 96,500 MW by 2025 and 129,500 MW by 2030.

The country has diverse energy sources, ranging from coal, oil, natural gas, hydropower, and renewable energy. At present, hydropower and coal-fired power lead amongst the power generation sources, and will continue to be the main short-term power sources for the country.

In the context of rising power demand, the Vietnamese Government has revised its power development plan in the direction of raising the power output from renewable sources. The Government also affirmed the importance of the stable and sustainable development of power sources in socio-economic development.

Nguyen Van Vy, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Energy Association (VEA), said many foreign organisations are supporting Vietnam in assessing energy source development potential. Many investors have also expressed interest in the energy market in Vietnam, considering preferential treatment for investment in solar and wind power. 

However, experts said new measures are needed to attract investment and improve energy efficiency from production to consumption in order to fully realise the country’s energy potential.

Savills Vietnam launches property management system

Property consultancy Savills Vietnam on March 28 launched the Savills Property Management System (SPMS), which provides a new technology platform connecting property investors and house-buyers.

Developed by experienced experts of Savills, the system is expected to improve management standards and meet residents’ demands, as well as ensure smooth operation of realtor projects.

At the launch event in Ho Chi Minh City, General Director of Savills Vietnam Neil MacGregor said the SPMS will open up a new door for technology application in the real estate sector, and property management in particular. 

It is a user-friendly system with mobile and website interfaces, allowing users to pay bills and make their bookings to use services offered in the projects with simple steps.

The SPMS has currently been integrated in some projects of Savills Vietnam in HCM City, Hanoi and Da Nang.

To date, Savills Vietnam manages more than four million square metres of housing and trading areas nationwide, including about 40,000 apartments. 

Ba Ria-Vung Tau: Investment inflow surges in Quarter 1

The southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau has licensed nearly 569 million USD registered for 11 new projects and 12 existing projects of both domestic and foreign investors since the beginning of 2019.

This sum of capital is equivalent to 47.4 percent of the province’s target for the entire year– 1.2 billion USD, according to the local industrial zone authority.

In the same period, 189 million USD was disbursed for projects at local industrial parks in the first quarter, surging by 210 percent year on year.

Head of the authority Nguyen Anh Triet highlighted the positive flow of investment into local industrial parks, noting that most of the zones have completed their infrastructure, which will offer more choices for investors to locate their projects.

Industrial parks in Ba Ria-Vung Tau are currently home to 385 valid projects with total registered capital of more than 19 billion USD. They include 188 projects of domestic investors with combined capital of nearly 97 trillion VND and 1.5 billion USD, and 197 foreign invested ones worth almost 11.5 billion USD.

In the three months, businesses at these zones also posted strong growth. Their industrial production value reached 78.1 trillion VND, while their revenue was estimated at 3.16 billion USD, up 31 percent and 26 percent from a year earlier, respectively.

Enterprises in the province earned 791 million USD in exports and imported over 1.5 billion USD worth of goods during the period, respectively rising by 41 percent and 76 percent year on year.

The authority attributed the surge in imports to many big factories’ high demand for equipment and input materials.

Aquatic firms struggle with human resources

Aquatic firms in Ho Chi Minh City and Mekong Delta provinces have been hampered by a labour shortage for processing and exporting works. The situation has declined since the beginning of this year, posing a challenge for the sector to fulfil its export target of 10 billion USD this year.

This firm needs nearly 600 labourers each year to produce 7,000 tonnes of aquatic products for exports. However, the actual number of workers only meets 75 percent of the demand despite their efforts in labour attraction and retention.

Labour shortages are a common problem among aquatic firms in the Mekong Delta region, which is home to 50 percent of aquatic production nationwide. According to the firms, the lack of skilled manual workers is their main obstacle due to a high turnover rate.

While the labour demand for the aquatic sector increases by 10-40 percent each year, the supply has yet to catch up, partly due to a lack of career orientation in vocational schools. Recognising the problem, many firms have been proactive in working with vocational schools to recruit graduates.

Aquatic products are among Vietnam’s major exports, which win favour from consumers worldwide. However, unless the Vietnamese aquaculture sector can addresses the labour problem, we may lose our competitive edge.

Vietnam to boost tourism development

The Vietnam International Tourism Mart is one of the biggest fairs for the local tourism industry, offering opportunities for trade and market expansion. It is hoped to be a big boost for Vietnam’s tourism industry in 2019.

This year marks the 7th consecutive year VITM has held and it has become a key event for the industry. This year’s fair is bigger than last year both in terms of scale and number of participants.

Visa announces plans to strengthen payments security in Vietnam

Visa, the world’s leader in digital payments, today launched its Future of Security Roadmap for Vietnam, outlining a robust approach for strengthening payments security in the country in the upcoming years.     

Visa’s roadmap focuses on a number of key initiatives such as that relates to devalue data by removing the sensitive data from the ecosystem and making stolen account details useless, or that on harnessing data by identifying potential fraud before it occurs and increase confidence in approving good transactions.

The initiatives also cover data protection by implementing safeguards to protect personal data as well as account details while empower everyone, including accountholders, third party providers and merchants, to play an active role in securing payments.

“We are proud to be launching our Vietnam Future of Security Roadmap. Securing the commerce ecosystem is our highest priority and one we view as a shared responsibility between payment networks, consumers, banks, and the government,” said Dang Tuyet Dung, Visa’s country manager for Vietnam and Lao.

“Technology has enabled new innovative ways to pay and be paid, but it has also brought unique risks. To stay ahead of fraud, we need to work together and give security the same attention and investment as we do the innovations driving new commerce experiences,” she added.

The release of Visa’s Roadmap comes at a time of rapid change for payments in Vietnam with innovations such as mobile payments to enhance the payment experience for consumers.

According to Visa’s recent Consumer Payment Attitude study security remains a key consideration for consumers across Southeast Asia with 67 per cent concerned about the safety of their personal information when using their mobile phone to make payments.

When asked specifically about what their top three concerns were when using their mobile phones to make payments, consumers in Vietnam said losing their phones or having their phones stolen, their phones getting hacked or someone intercepting their data, and malware or viruses being installed on their phones.

Visa works with industry stakeholders including financial institutions, merchants, policy makers, law enforcement and account holders to secure payments. The Visa Future of Security Roadmap is the product of comprehensive consultations and collaboration, making it an authoritative document on Vietnamese payments security.

Visa is delivering roadmaps around the world to ensure the security of the global commerce ecosystem, as well as working with Vietnamese industry bodies to align security initiatives.

Sustainable coffee production project benefits Lam Dong farmers

The Vietnam Sustainable Agriculture Transformation project (VnSAT) has proven effective in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong, helping enhance coffee production effectiveness in the locality and change local farmers’ awareness of sustainable coffee farming.

Local farmers have been supported in building infrastructure facilities and purchasing equipment for cultivation and production. 

In the last three years, training courses on cultivation technique were offered to some 10,000 farmer households in Lam Dong. 

Hundreds of sustainable re-planting and production models and water-saving irrigation models for coffee were formed. 

Attention was also paid to developing cooperatives, aiming to promote production and consumption links. 

So far, the project has provided more than 33 billion VND (over 1.4 million USD) for developing infrastructure facilities, rural roads and storehouses in Lam Ha and Di Linh districts, as well as and Loc Phat and Loc Thanh communes in Bao Loc city. 

VnSAT’s management board said it will continue to implement sub-projects on infrastructure, production device and water-saving irrigation in Bao Lam, Lam Ha and Di Linh districts, and Bao Loc city. 

The sustainable coffee cultivation area in the Central Highlands region reached 22,000 ha, exceeding the set target, with profit growth 4.5 percent. 

VnSAT began in December in 2015 in eight Mekong Delta localities: An Giang, Dong Thap, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Long An, Soc Trang and Tien Giang, and Can Tho; and the five Central Highlands provinces of Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum and Lam Dong. 

The project is expected to help increase the number of agricultural products with export value worth more than 1 billion USD.

In the Central Highlands region, the VnSAT project provided advanced technologies to about 63,000 farmers for use on 69,000 ha.

The total added value is expected to be around 48 million USD to 50 million USD for each year from 2015 to 2020.

Ho Chi Minh City Int’l Travel Expo to take place in September

The 15th edition of the Ho Chi Minh City International Travel Expo, the largest of its kind in the Mekong sub-region, will take place at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Centre in Vietnam’s largest city from September 5-7.

Speaking at a press conference in Hanoi on March 28, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City’s Tourism Promotion Centre Le Truong Hien Hoa said that the organising board set a target of attracting over 350 exhibitors, a year-on-year rise of 40 percent.

The expo is expected to draw 250 foreign buyers from outbound travel agents in over 40 nations and territories, especially the four key regions of Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, North America and Europe, to create a breakthrough in tourism promotion during 2019-2020.

It is also hoped to attract around 35,000 visitors, up 25 percent year-on-year.

The expo will include trading activities at booths to introduce destinations and tourism products of Vietnam and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, and talks between sellers and foreign buyers and visitors.

A seminar on cruise tourism, a tourism start-up forum and a photo exhibition will be held within the framework of the event.

The expo was first organised in 2005 with a goal of promoting tourism products and services in the Mekong sub-region and Asia. It has been supported by Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia; the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism of Laos; the Ministry of Hotels & Tourism of Myanmar; and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand.

Vietnam among fastest growing markets for Visa globally

Vietnamese consumers are embracing digital payments as a faster and more convenient way to pay, with consumers using their credit and debit cards more often for in store and online purchases.

Vietnam is one of the fastest growing markets for Visa across the globe and the US payments technology company stands ready to support the Vietnamese government to realize the vision for a cashless economy, Al Kelly, chief executive officer of Visa Inc. has said.

“With a young population, emerging middle class and consistently strong economic growth, we are very optimistic about the future of digital payments here and the role we can play in supporting Vietnam as it continues on its path to becoming a developed economy,” Kelly is quoted as saying in a statement.

Al Kelly headed a delegation of Visa executives in a visit to Vietnam earlier this week as the US-based payments technology company reinforces its commitment to growing the adoption of digital payments and driving the digital economy.  

The delegation met with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, State Bank of Vietnam Governor Le Minh Hung, as well as heads of Vietnamese banks, to discuss the importance of digital payments and how the company can deepen its partnership across the ecosystem.

“We strongly support Vision 2045 and will continue to partner with our clients, the government and the broader ecosystem to help Vietnam realize this goal. We have come a long way but there is still much to do. Visa has a long standing commitment to Vietnam with the first Visa card payments being accepted by retailers back in 1995 and the first Visa credit card launched in the country two years later.

Visa will soon be launching its Future of Security Roadmap for Vietnam, working closely with the State Bank of Vietnam to design a robust approach for strengthening payments security in the country.

Visa is also working closely with the government to enable digital payments across a variety of use cases including transit, with developments underway on a smart ticketing system on city buses in Ho Chi Minh City.

The figures indicate a number of positive trends in the growth of digital payments in Vietnam. The total value of purchases made by Vietnamese consumers on their Visa credit and debit cards was up 37% year-on-year in 2018, while the number of transactions rose 25%. eCommerce in particular saw strong growth with the total value of purchases up by 40%.

“Vietnam is at a pivotal time in the evolution of its economy. While the country has a heavy reliance on cash, we are seeing some very positive signs of this changing, including increasing uptake of digital payments such as debit cards and credit cards, the adoption of new payment technologies such as contactless payments, and a rise in eCommerce,” Kelly said.

Hanoi strives to remain among top 10 competitive localities

Hanoi’s ranking has been consistently going up in six consecutive years, up 41 places from 51st in 2012 to 9th in 2018.

Hanoi strives to maintain its Top-10 status in Vietnam’s provincial competitiveness index  (PCI) ranking in the future, which was achieved for the first time in 2018, according to Nguyen Doan Toan, vice chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee. 

“The recognition would serve as motivation for Hanoi to enhance governance capability for greater business and investment environments,” Toan said at the launching ceremony of the 2018 PCI report on March 28. 

The report, jointly launched by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID), has been announced annually since 2005 to assess the ease of doing business, economic governance, and administrative reform efforts by the provincial and city governments in Vietnam in order to promote the development of the private sector. 

“Hanoi’s ranking has been consistently going up in six consecutive years, up 41 places from 51st in 2012 to 9th in 2018,” Toan stated, adding the result has exceeded original target of being included in top 10 PCI index ranking by 2020 set by the municipal People Council. 

Fourteen years since its first launch, the PCI index has been an important reference channel of the business community for Hanoi, especially when the city considers the private sector an essential part in its economic development strategy, Toan continued. 

“Improvement of the PCI ranking is Hanoi’s top priority,” he said. 

According to Toan, Hanoi would continue to reform administrative procedures in all districts and communes, while facilitating the development of e-government. 

As of present, 100% applications for business registration can be processed online, while the processing time for administrative procedures has been reduced to within three working days, and in some cases to two days. 

Starting August 2018, Hanoi has waived the cost of setting up new businesses and provided training courses for individual households on start-up and corporate governance. 

Notably, Hanoi claimed the top spot nationwide in terms of FDI attraction with registered capital of US$7.5 billion in 2018, accounting for 21.2% of total foreign investment nationwide. 

In the first quarter of 2019, the city maintained the lead with US$4.15 billion of FDI commitments, or 38.4% of total investment, Toan informed. 

HCMC sees sharp increase in arrivals of Indian visitors

India ranked 11th in the list of top 20 countries with the highest visitors to Vietnam, announced the Department of Tourism of HCMC at the ‘Visit Incredible India in 2019’ event promoting Indian tourism in the Southern economic hub which was held in the city on March 20 by the Indian Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the end of 2018, HCMC received more than 103,000 Indian visitors which was 80.9 percent increase over the previous year and accounted for 50 percent of the total number of Indian tourists to Vietnam. At the same time, over 31,000 Vietnamese visitors came to India, up 32 percent compared to a year ago

Although the number of tourists of the two countries has recently increased but it has been not worthy of the two sides ‘potentials, said Consul General of India in Ho Chi Minh City, K. Srikar Reddy.

Vietnamese and Indian policies have focused on e-visa issuance for foreigners and the launch of direct routes between HCMC and Delhi operated by low-cost carrier Vietjet, he added.

Chairman of the HCM City Tourism Association, Tran Hung Viet appreciated potentials of tourism development and cooperation between Vietnam and India. The two countries should strengthen tourism promotion to attract visitors, especially offering several direct flights connecting Vietnam and India.

On January 18, India’s Minister for Tourism K. J. Alphons attended the Seventh Meeting of Tourism Ministers of ASEAN and India held in Ha Long City.

At the meeting, the ministers designated 2019 as the ASEAN-India Tourism Co-operation Year, and hoped to enhance cooperation with the goal of increasing two-way tourism and promoting friendship between ASEAN and India.

Vietnam launches labor inspection campaign in woodwork industry

A labor inspection campaign was kicked off in Binh Duong Province today, March 27, to promote labor law compliance for the sustainable development of the country’s woodwork industry.

The campaign will involve a mix of inspection activities, training, communication and outreach activities that will engage workers and enterprises and raise their awareness of the importance of labor law compliance in the wood processing industry nationwide, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO).

The 2019 labor inspection campaign, which will run until the end of the year, is being conducted by the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) with the support of ILO through the New Industrial Relations Framework project. It is also a collaboration effort with the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and other wood processing associations.

The woodwork sector employs some 500,000 workers, of which roughly 40%-45% are seasonal unskilled workers. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the number of laborers working in forest plantations and wood processing factories could be in the range of millions of people in mountainous and rural areas.

However, multiple challenges are clouding labor law compliance in the sector. Inspections in the 2016-2018 period and surveys of wood firms in Dong Nai Province have revealed many violations of labor laws and regulations, particularly in terms of overtime, labor contracts, unemployment benefits, occupational safety and health and social insurance.

“We recognize that most wood processing companies use outdated technology and unskilled workers, resulting in many limitations in labor law compliance,” said MoLISA Chief Inspector Nguyen Tien Tung, adding that these violations adversely affect the safety and health of workers and reduce their productivity and the overall competitiveness of the sector’s exports.

“Decent work is an important condition to ensure that Vietnam is seen as a trusted actor in the global supply chain and the first choice of buyers in a very competitive market,” stated the manager of ILO’s US-funded New Industrial Relations Framework Project, Andrea Prince, adding that strengthening the strategic approach of the labor inspectorate is a key step toward delivering the compliance results that buyers seek and workers need.

The 2019 Labour Inspection Campaign is the fifth of its kind since 2015. Initiated by ILO and MoLISA each year, the campaign focuses on promoting compliance in a specific sector.

FPT Retail to open Long Chau pharmacies nationwide

FPT Digital Retail JSC (FPT Retail) has announced an ambitious plan to open 50 new Long Chau pharmacies this year and then some 100-200 additional ones in each of the next few years to popularize the brand nationwide.

At the company’s annual shareholder meeting held today, March 27, in HCMC, FPT Retail Chairwoman and CEO Nguyen Bach Diep announced the firm’s business plans for this year, including the target to increase the number of Long Chau pharmacies by 2022 and enhance pharmaceutical sales.

Specifically, the company expected to have 72 Long Chau pharmacies this year, and the number was projected to surge to hundreds by 2022.

As the pharmaceutical sector is promising, FPT Retail will invest heavily in the business this year, particularly in logistics services and human resources.

Pharmaceutical products are distributed through hospitals, clinics and drug stores. FPT Retail has set a target to distribute 30% of pharmaceutical products through drug stores within the next three to four years.

Also, Long Chau pharmacies are expected to generate revenue of some VND10 trillion (US$431.2 million), making up 40% of FPT Retail’s revenue.

Starting from next week, Heineken Silver will be available in all distribution channels nationwide at the same price as Heineken Original. Consumers can also buy Heineken Silver on e-commerce platforms, including Heineken’s Drinkies website at from this April. Heineken Silver contains 4% ABV.

Heineken Vietnam is a subsidiary of Heineken, the most international brewer. Originated in the Netherlands, this family-owned business with a history of over 150 years, brews and distributes over 300 beer and cider brands in more than 190 countries.

Heineken Vietnam, which was established in 1991, operates six breweries in Hanoi, Danang, Quang Nam, HCMC, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Tien Giang and nine sales offices across the country.

From humble beginnings with only 20 employees in Vietnam, Heineken Vietnam is now the second largest brewer in Vietnam with more than 3,500 employees. Long An-based technology park project to treat over 36,000 tons of waste per day

The Green Environmental Technology Park owned by Vietnam Waste Solutions (VWS), with a total area of 1,760 hectares, will have the capacity to treat 36,500 tons of waste each day by 2050.

A representative of VWS said the Green Environment Technology Park was developed to handle all sorts of garbage, including household, hazardous, medical, industrial and electronic wastes, sewage sludge, wastewater and used tires. The source was speaking at an inauguration ceremony, held today, March 27, in Thu Thua District, Long An Province, for the two bridges (VWS1 and VWS2) leading to the park, funded by Vietnam Waste Solutions-Long An (VWSLA).

VWS General Director David Duong remarked that the operation of the project was expected to last 50 years and would be funded in three phases. The first phase, lasting until 2025, will treat an estimated 21,400 tons of waste per day. Meanwhile, in the second phase from 2026 to 2035 and the third phase until 2050, the park will handle 26,800 tons and 36,500 tons each day, respectively.

“A total of US$450 million will be poured into the first phase of the project,” Duong stated.

The representative noted that the project employs four treatment methods: biotechnological processes, recycling, waste incineration for energy generation and waste burial.

He said that when in place, apart from processing all sorts of waste, the park would be able to treat the waste from HCMC, Long An Province and provinces in the southern key economic zone.

The establishment of the Green Environmental Technology Park will contribute to sustainable environmental protection, creating jobs for local laborers and fostering the economic growth of Long An Province as well as the southern key economic zone.

Phan Van Toi, vice chairman of the Thu Thua District authority, remarked that Long An Province alone has 600 tons of waste in need of treatment daily, half of which is handled at the Tam Sinh Nghia treatment facility in Long An’s Thanh Hoa District, and the remaining 50% is treated at Da Phuoc Waste Treatment Complex in Binh Chanh District and Phuoc Hiep Waste Treatment Complex in Cu Chi District.

Speaking at the ceremony, Duong said the two bridges and approach roads were constructed to serve the Green Environment Technology Park, playing a key role in its success.

Hai Phong fertiliser plant recommended for removal from watch list

A proposal has been put forward to remove a fertiliser project in Hai Phong from the list of 12 major inefficient projects in need of close watch since it has been operating profitably for the past three years.

The suggestion was made by its parent company Vinachem at a meeting of the steering committee in charge of the 12 projects on March 27.

Vinachem, Vietnam’s national chemicals group, stated the plant posted profits of over VND195 billion (US$8.4 million) in 2018 and over VND12 billion (US$516, 000) in the first two months of this year.

At the meeting, Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue agreed with the proposal and asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to complete the removal procedures.

He added that such a move will increase the project’s credit, making it easier for the plant to mobilise funds for its production.

In addition to the Hai Phong fertiliser project, the Viet Trung steel plant has also begun to operate at a profit.

Meanwhile four of the six currently operating projects, including three fertiliser projects and a shipyard, have seen their losses declining.

Among the three projects whose operations were halted, the Dinh Vu polyester fibre plant and the Quang Ngai biofuel plant have resumed production while resumption plans for Binh Phuoc biofuel is being formulated.

The remaining projects are facing legal issues with EPC contractors.

Deputy PM Vuong Dinh Hue asked the ministries and enterprises concerned to focus on resolving the contentious issues creatively and settle the projects with patience in order to reach agreements with the relevant parties in the most beneficial manner.

EU-Vietnam FTA brings benefits to both sides

The European Union - Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) plays an important role in the promotion of bilateral economic and trade exchange, bringing about benefits for both sides, head of the France-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians' Group Stephanie Do told Nhan Dan Online.

She noted that the Friendship Parliamentarians' Group at the French National Assembly strongly supports the signing and approval of this agreement.

"We strongly support the signing and approval of this agreement. The agreement plays a significant role in boosting economic and trade exchange, offering benefits for both Vietnam and EU. This is a new-generation agreement and a gateway for the EU to enter Vietnam and also for Vietnam to go into the EU," she emphasised.

Regarding the cooperation between Vietnam and France, Stephanie Do highly appreciated the determination of leaders of both countries in strengthening cooperation in various fields through the signing of cooperation agreements within the framework of recent high-level visits.

The two countries also held celebrations to mark the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the fifth anniversary of the strategic partnership. The French Government expressed their wish to develop bilateral relations with Vietnam via high-level visits by Prime Minister Edouard Philippe last year and President Emmanuel Macron in the near future.

Stephanie Do said it was a great honour for her to receive General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong in Paris in March 2018 and to accompany French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe during his visit to Vietnam in November 2018. She added that the relationship between France and Vietnam has never been intensified as greatly as today, including strategic cooperation in all areas, such as economy, health and education.

The French NA deputy said that the France-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentarians' Group wishes to promote the bilateral relations in all areas to enhance the position of France in Vietnam.

Stephanie Do is one of the first Vietnamese French people to join politics in France. She asserted that the more we integrate in the host country, more initiatives we will bring to our country.

"I have worked closely with the Vietnamese Embassy in France to promote Vietnamese culture, helping the French discover our rich and interesting culture. I have also worked with representatives of many associations to bring about mutual trust in the partnership. Standing side by side, we can boost beautiful images of Vietnamese culture as well as of the Vietnamese community who have integrated very well into French society," Stephanie Do said.

Binh Thuan aims to turm Mui Ne into a national tourism site

In 2025, Mui Ne National Tourism Site expects to welcome 9 million visitors, including 1.5 million foreigners.

Binh Thuan province People’s Committee has  issued a plan to realize the decision of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on the development of Mui Ne into a national tourism site by 2025 with an orientation towards 2030. 

According to the plan, Binh Thuan province will focus on investing and developing the infrastructure and tourism services to meet the criteria of a national tourism site. In addition, there will be an appropriate policy to attract strong investors to come and develop Mui Ne into an attractive destination in the South Central Coastal Region and in the whole nation. Up to 2030, it will become one of the leading spot in the Asia – Pacific region.

In 2025, Mui Ne National Tourism Site is expected to welcome 9 million visitors, including 1.5 million foreigners. Up to 2030, the site would receive 14 million visitors, including 2.5 million foreigners. In 2025, Mui Ne National Tourism Site expects to earn VND24 trillion(US$1.03 billion).

Mui Ne National Tourism Site is located on the strip of land of 14.760ha, stretching along the coast from Hoa Phu commune (Tuy Phong district) to Phu Hai ward (Phan Thiet city). Of the totaI, an area of 1,000 ha is defined as a key area for the establishment and development of functional areas for tourism sector. Mui Ne National Tourism Site will be developed according to the green growth criteria with the purpose of protecting environment and landscapes, especially the ecosystem in Bau Trang tourist area and sand dunes along the seashore.
