Salanganes’ nests are gifts from the God, but it’s not easy to pick

VietNamNet Bridge – The high profitability of salanganes breeding and trading has prompted people to follow this kind of business. However, it is not easy to make profit with it.

Popularizing the “royal food”

Trading salanganes’ nests has been considered one of the most profitable kinds of business. Therefore, a lot of salanganes’ nest shops have been established in big cities. In HCM City alone, there are about 100 shops.

Besides some famous brands such as Khanh Hoa salanganes, Yen Viet, Hoang Yen, Thien Hoang or Bao Ngoc, a lot of new brands have appeared on the market. A lot of new houses for salanganes have arisen, and a lot of new brands have been introduced to customers.

Salaganes’ nests have also been available at big wholesale markets such as Ben Thanh, An Dong or Binh Tay. However, the products here do not bear any brands.

The prices of salanganes’ nests vary, from several million dong per 100 grams to tens of millions of dong. In general, salanganes’ nests have been divided into two groups, white nests and blood nests. The latter product is always more expensive, because it is believed to have higher nutrition.

In Vietnam, besides farmed salanganes, wild salanganes living on islands, there are also available the imports from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Imports are much more cheaper because of the lower quality, which are priced at between 1.5-2 million dong per 100 grams.

The products made of salanganes’ nests have come more and more diversified. However, the products remain unpopular because of the high prices. Salanganes’ nest products have been bought to present to others as gifts, or for special healthcare, while they have not been used as a kind of daily drinks.

That explains why the sales of salanganes’ nests and products tend to increase on holiday or Tet, when people drink at family parties.

However, Dang Pham Minh Loan, Deputy Managing Director of VinaCapital, still can see the great potentials of the industry, saying that the market tends to grow rapidly in accordance with the rapid improving living standards of Vietnamese people.

Vietnamese consumers now pay more attention to the products with natural resources that are good for human health. Especially, experts believe in the high potentials of the market also because of the tendency of “popularizing salanganes products” when the products tend to decrease in prices.

“The white gold” still has not turned into “pure gold”

Though it is a very profitable business, there still exist big challenges. Loan said that salanganes’ nests are valuable and the number of regular consumers is not high. According to VinaCapital, the number of people consuming salanganes’ nests just accounts for 2 percent of the total population.

Meanwhile, consumers, when seeking to purchase salanganes products, only buy well branded products. Therefore, it is not easy for the new comers on the market.

The current output of salanganes’ nests in Vietnam remains low due to the low development of houses for salanganes farming. There are about several thousands of houses for salanganes, much lower than Indonesia, while the number has reached 200,000.

While the demand remains limited, the number of suppliers has been increasing, which has made the competition among them fiercer. According to Le Danh Hoang, Director of Chan Hung Trade and Service Company, a lot of new shops have been opened, and a lot of have to shut down.

Hoang Yen once set up a big shop on Nguyen Trai Street, but it was shut down just after one year because of the loss. The one-year operation alone took away one billion dong from Hoang.

It is very difficult to breed salanganes. Hoang Yen has been breeding salanganes for five years, but it only began having enough supply to sell to customers three months ago.
