Phan Tan Loc

VietNamNet Bridge – Phan Tuan Loc, 64, has lived for nearly 20 years without any kind of food. His daily meals are several glasses of tea.

Loc was born in HCM City. His family moved to Phuoc Thoi ward, O Mon district, in the Mekong Delta province of Can Tho in 1975.

In 1989 he was suddenly afraid of meat and became a vegetarian. A few years later, he stopped eating food altogether, and since then, tea has been his major source of sustenance.

The man is the father of five children, three daughters and two sons. He grew up normally, but after his wife delivered his smallest son, he felt sick when eating meat.

He initially thought that was a temporary reaction of his body but the case got more serious, though he could still work normally. He only enjoyed drinking tea, not eating food.

His family was very scared and they didn’t disclose the case to anybody. He went to hospitals but he couldn’t eat. Loc began to stop going to parties but he couldn’t avoid all such events. His neighbours had suspicions about Loc when he didn’t eat anything, but only drank tea at some wedding parties.

Loc’s neighbours then suspected he hadn’t eaten for years. They thought only a devil could live without food. Loc’s family invited some magicians to pray but the man still couldn’t eat.

Loc’s daily menu is three glasses of tea with sugar.

He said the differences he has noticed are that his hair has become thinner, his face looks tired and his voice is lower.

Doctor Nguyen Xuan Huong of Can Tho General Hospital said there are similar cases in the world. Loc doesn’t eat food but he still drinks tea and sugar so he still has some energy to exist.

Loc said whenever he feels weak, he goes to a health station to have a protein solution transmission and this is an efficient source of energy.

Doctor Nguyen Thi Thu, Head of the HCM City Traditional Medicine Hospital, said this is a rare case since Loc has been able to live for almost 20 years without food.
