VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) is developing the next generation network (NGN) at a cost of up to US$1 billion.
VNPT Deputy General Director Bui Thien Minh, in a recent interview, said that the group had finished part of the project and it planned to complete the whole network in late 2008 or early 2009 at the latest.
According to Mr. Minh, broadband services provided by VNPT at the moment are not abundant because the needs for those services are still modest and not many state agencies and companies have used those services.
However, VNPT will have to develop the NGN infrastructure in advance to prepare for the boom of those services in the future. At present, customers using broadband services of VNPT are mainly the sectors that have great and strict connection needs like finance and banking, aviation, etc.
VNPT has supplied virtual private network services to some big foreign companies in Vietnam. Mr. Minh said that broadband services would boom once the NGN infrastructure was completed.
After building the NGN, VNPT will provide all kinds of broadband services with quality up to international standards.

A Next Generation Network (NGN) is a packet-based network able to provide services including telecommunications services and able to make use of multiple broadband, QoS-enabled transport technologies and in which service-related functions are independent from underlying transport-related technologies. It offers unrestricted access by users to different service providers. It supports generalised mobility which allows for the consistent and ubiquitous provision of services for users. |
