National park finds hundreds of rare medicinal herbs
19:48' 30/12/2006 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – Scientists have found 665 species of medicinal plants belonging to 18 families in the Xuan Son National Park of the midland province of Phu Tho, bringing the park's flora system to 1,217 species under 190 families.

Of the newly-found species, 22 are red-listed as rare, making the park home to 40 plant species endangered in Vietnam.

In addition to the park's rich biological diversity, scientists have found that tens of medicinal herbs may grow in vast areas and develop into cash crops.

The park managerial board has been intensifying patrols and launched campaigns among its staff and local population against wanton destruction or harvest of rare plants.
