The earthquake in Southern Taiwan on the night of December 26 has broken cable lines in a large region of Hong Kong – China – Taiwan, which also disrupted the internet accessibility in Vietnam.

According to Viettel Internet, most of the regional and international calls have been back to normal. However, customers are encouraged to use basic internet tools instead of other complicated applications such as download of music and movies until the disconnected lines gets back to normal.

Mr Le Huu Hien, Vice Director of the Viettel International Telephone Service said that “Viettel is now trying to directly associate with internet service suppliers in America so that the international communication capacity in Vietnam can be increased by 50% everyday until the whole system operates smoothly again”.

Currently, all the Internet, Frame Relay and IP VPN services provided by VDC are also negatively suffering from the unexpected incident. Customers using these services are unable to surf international websites, or if possible, to access them at a snail’s pace. VDC has urged its international telecommunications partners to utilize other applications for a certain period of time.

“We have to consult with other international companies to shift internet access volume into precautionary systems so that we can minimize the domestic overloading situation. However, the answer is quite up to the goodwill of each partner”, said Mr Mai Sung, Vice General Director of FPT.

Mr Sung also warned internet users not to spend so much time accessing international websites except for the emergency; otherwise the situation would get worse.
