VietNamNet Bridge – Six investors have been short listed and in a few days the HCM City Department for Natural Resources and the Environment will further consider the selection of the most capable investors for the projects on rubbish treatment in the city.
Some 6,000 tonnes of rubbish are produced every day in HCM City, and in the near future, rubbish will not be rubbish any more, but the material for power generation.
Rubbish treatment has been one of the issues of public interest in the last few years. In HCM City, there is a power plant generating electricity from rubbish, the Go Cat plant. Having been operating since July 2005 and with the capacity of 750 KWH, the plant has provided 6.4mil KWH worth VND4.2bil ($0.26mil).
According to the HCM City Urban Environment Company, the investor of the Go Cat power plant, once the plant runs at full capacity, it will be able to produce 2,400 KWH every hour and the sum of money to be collected from rubbish will be three times higher than currently.
The HCM City Urban Environment Company is also planning to produce fertiliser from rubbish. A plant, which can deal with 800 tonnes of rubbish a day, will be put into operation in 2007. In addition, the fertiliser plant will also create more power: the gas generated in the process of fertiliser production will be compressed for generating electricity.
In an effort to speed up the projects, the HCM City Peoples’ Committee has decided to set up a fund for recycling with the initial capital of $12mil. The fund specialises in assisting and loaning money to projects in the fields of rubbish and waste management and recycling.
