A recent research study conducted by the Institute of Medical Strategies and Policies on Mental Health of Old People revealed that 5% of old people over 60 among 1,132 households surveyed suffer from mental depression.

The target group was studied in seven provinces across the country: Son La, Hai Duong, Ha Tinh, Ninh Thuan, Daklak, Ba Ria - Vung Tau and Vinh Long.

The common symptoms of those victims are permanent stress, loss of temper and concentration, and inability to sleep. Some even revealed their desires to commit suicide or perform crimes.

According to medical experts, the best way for the old to avoid this severe disease is to maintain a balanced life by frequently visiting friends and relatives to ward off loneliness.
