VietNamNet BridgeVietnam is one of two countries in the world that have the highest numbers of primates facing extinction.

“Of 25 species of primates facing extinction in the world, Vietnam has five,” said Professor Herbert Covert from Colorado University, the US, at the first specialised training course on primate preservation in Vietnam held on Monday in Hanoi.

Jake Burner from the Washington-based International Conservation Organisation said that Vietnam and Madagascar were the two countries receiving the most attention on performing urgent measures to preserve primates.

While Madagascar has hundreds of experts joining hands to preserve primates, there are few in Vietnam, he said.

The three-week training course is being co-held by the Hanoi University for Natural Sciences and the International Conservation Organisation.
