VietNamNet – The Vietnam Association for Rheumatism Studies has begun to research the standard bone density and define the bone fracture ratio on Vietnamese people under a project called Calcimex research – VRA.

This project is backed by funding from Dutch Lady Vietnam Company. Over two years the company will supply VND1.2bil (US$75,000) to projects in Hanoi, Ha Nam Province, HCM City and Kien Giang Province.

The research is hoped to collect data on the prevalence of osteomalacia which involves softening of bones due to vitamin D deficiency. Further studies will reveal numbers of bone fractures caused by osteomalacia, bio-chemical indexes reflecting the process of bone changes, bone density, according to Dr. Tran Ngoc Anh, Chairman of the Vietnam Association for Rheumatism Studies.
