VietNamNet - A medical congress on setting up the Vietnam Endoscopy and Endoscopic Surgery Association (VEESA) took place in Hanoi on Feb. 24.

VEESA, a society gathering the country's leading experts in the field of endoscopic surgery, will support scientific studies on endoscopy techniques, better the application of the techniques into disease treatment and provide professional training and consultation for the development of Vietnam's endoscopic surgery.

So far, VEESA has as many as 800 members, 38 of whom were selected as the executive board for the first tenure. Prof. Nguyen Dinh Hoi, with 45 years' experience in surgery, was elected VEESA chairman.

Endoscopy technique, introduced into Vietnam in the 1990s, has become an effective tool in diagnosis and treatment. It uses a long tube carrying a camera, allowing surgeons to see patients' internal organs.

More than 126,000 endoscopic surgeries have been successfully carried out, mostly in the two major cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
