VietNamNet – The Overseas Vietnamese Club for Science & Technology (OVS Club) was inaugurated on December 28 in HCM City.

The non-profit sci-tech club was established on December 28 by HCM City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese under Resolution 36 of the Politburo dated March 26, 2004.

It currently has around 130 members, including 109 official members, who are intellectuals. Among them 18.8% work in IT, 19% in economics, 12% in chemistry, and 12.7% in mechanics. 31% are Vietnamese German, 24% Vietnamese American, 14% Vietnamese Japanese, 18% Vietnamese French, and 11.7% Vietnamese Australian.

OVS Club was established for overseas Vietnamese scientists and experts to share and exchange information and experience in all sci-tech fields. It is also a bridge spanning domestic and overseas intellectuals, and both international and domestic sci-tech organizations and centres.

Club members will participate in contributing opinions to sci-tech research, and in the long term, will mobilize overseas Vietnamese to join hands in building HCM City Hi-tech Zone, perform contracts ordered by domestic organizations, assist HCM City’s National University to build and operate a chip centre, and support the city’s Calculation Institute project.

In addition, OVS will cooperate with the National University and HCM City Committee for Overseas Vietnamese to set up a Centre for Consulting, Training, Researching and Applying Sci-tech Achievements of Overseas Vietnamese. In education and training, overseas Vietnamese intellectuals will help establish international-standard universities and design online training programmes.

One of their key programmes will be to raise capital from overseas Vietnamese to upgrade training at the Technology and Business Administration Semi-Public College under HCM City Industrial and Export Processing Zones Management Board.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Committee for Overseas Vietnamese, over 2.7mil Vietnamese live in around 90 countries and territories. Around 200,000 are university graduates operating in sci-tech fields.
