VietNamNet Bridge - In the World Chess Federation (FIDE)’s ranking on March 1, Vietnam’s top chess player Le Quang Liem increased his Elo from 2,647 to 2,689 and now ranks in the top 50.

Liem jumped 51 places to rank No.42 in the world and from No.11 to No. 4 in the World Youth Rankings. This is a record high ranking for a Vietnamese Grandmaster.
Liem won a silver medal at the International U-10 Championships in 2001 and since then has never failed to win a medal at any international competition. He reached a new high level in 2004 when won both the World and Asian U-14 Championships.
In July, 2005, he was sent to Hungary to train with world grandmasters at the Chesscom centre. At that time, he achieved world master status and surpassed the first standard for becoming a world grandmaster.
In June, 2006, during his first participation in Olympic Chess, he passed the second world grandmaster standard just 1 month later he reached the Elo of 2.504 and was recognised world master, which is a nearly unheard of phenomena.
By the first month of this year, Liem had become the first Vietnamese chess player to reach the World’s top 100 and had resolved to reach the top 50 one month later.
By winning the Aeroflot tournament and ranking third at the Moscow tournament Liem has proved to be a smash hit.
With a 9-match winning streaks at Aeroflot, Liem is entitled to play in the Dortmund Super Grandmasters chess tournament, which is open only to 6 world grandmasters and the Aeroflot champion and 5 other chess players in the world’s top 10, selected by FIDE.
Vietnam’s top chess player is aiming to an Elo of 2,700 and to compete against professional components in July this year.
