Ping-pong parents protest about chief’s behavior

His assurance that the problems they have complained about will be resolved before the Tet holidays (February 13-15) came at a meeting with the players and their parents on Friday.

The meeting followed public complaints by the players and their parents about the behavior of Nguyen Thi Lanh, chief of the table-tennis department and two other coaches Tran Tuan Anh and Vuong Ngoc Son.

Tran Anh Tuan, father of Tran Nguyen Thanh Truc, said, “We can’t stand Lanh’s arbitrary ways and lack of respect for other people.

“Lanh frequently reprimands players during a match or right after they’ve finished playing one.”

The players and their parents on Tuesday sent a letter listing their grievances to newspapers, the management of the city’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, leaders of Sports and Physical Training School and coaching staff of HCMC table-tennis team.

The players said they wanted to quit the team because of the behavior of Lanh and other officials.

The sports department’s director Nguyen Thanh Rum had originally planned to meet with the players and parents next Tuesday (February 9) but later said he was busy and asked Deputy Director Nguyen Hung to hold the meeting on Friday (February 5).

At the end of the Friday’s meeting, Hung said concerned people would meet to resolve the problem. He encouraged the players to continue to attending training sessions.
