Badminton ace Minh to play in Hong Kong Open

Viet Nam’s top badminton player, Nguyen Tien Minh, will be competing in the Hong Kong Super Series, which kicks off today, November 11.

The world No 7 is seeded No 7 at the tournament, which carries a total cash prize of US$250,000.

Minh will need to make it into the quarter-finals to maintain a spot in the world top 10.

The Vietnamese Olympian will first meet Kurniawan Tedjono of Indonesia, who ranks 30 in the world.

If he makes it through the qualifiers, he will next meet world No 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the quarters, who he has beaten once.

Vu to compete in world champs in Switzerland

Asian Indoor Games’ silver medallist Duong Anh Vu is currently taking part in the World Individual 3-cushion Carom Championship in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The Asian champion and world No 16 is in group L together with Funaki Kouji of Japan and Konstantinos of Greece.

Viet Nam’s Nguyen An Toan is also competing. He is in group P together with De Brujin Jean Paul from the Netherlands and Rudolph Christian of Germany.

The tournament has drawn 48 competitors from 21 countries. It will end on Sunday.

Viet Nam bids to host Asian tournaments

Vice chairman of Viet Nam Olympic Committee Hoang Vinh Giang said Viet Nam is hoping to host the Asian Beach Games in 2016 and the Asian Games (ASIAD) in 2019.

"We hope that with the experience gained from organising the Asian Indoor Games, Viet Nam will get to host other Asian sports events," Giang said.

Binh Duong to compete in AFC Cup next year

Becamex Binh Duong have been selected to take part in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup’s main round next year.

Binh Duong were the first Vietnamese team to make it into this year AFC semi-final round where they lost to Syria’s Al Karamah 1-5.

V-League champions and National Cup winner SHB Da Nang will take part in the play-offs against Thailand’s Muangthong United, Seiwijaya of Indonesia and Singapore Armed Forces for a berth in the main round.
