Thien eyes next stage of Bavarian Open

VietNamNet Bridge – Viet Nam's Nguyen Hoang Thien beat Ram Or of Israel 7-5, 7-5 to sail over the quarter-final of the boy's singles at the Bavarian Junior Tennis Open in Munich, Germany yesterday, August 13.

In the main draw on Wednesday, Thien beat Germany's Schlegtendal 6-2, 6-1 before cruising Russia's Kravtsov Maxim 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.

Thien meets the winner in the third round match between Germany Wagner Hannes and Miocic Franko from Croatia, who were playing late yesterday.

In a bid to improve his world ranking, the rising star has trained with a leading American coach, Roy Coopersmith who guided Serbian star Jelena Jankovic in 2006.

The 14-year-old is ranked 534th in the world, higher than any other Vietnamese junior tennis player has ever risen.

At the Rushbrooke International Tennis Federation U-18 tournament in Ireland last month, he also cruised into the quarter-finals. Last October, Thien, climbed to the top of the Asian Tennis Federation's U-14 rankings after winning the International Tennis Federation Under-18 crown in southern Binh Duong Province.

The Bavarian tournament has drawn 500 players from 30 nations. It ends on Sunday.
