VietNamNet Bridge - Vietnamese athlete Mai Phuong has been selected by the International Wushu Federation to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games scheduled to be held in Beijing from August 8 - 24.
The approval was made on the basis of Vietnam's good showing at the world tournament last November, raising the total number of Vietnamese martial artists to participate in the 2008 Olympic Games to eight. These include Vu Tra My, Nguyen Thuy Linh, Nguyen Mai Phuong, Tran Duc Trong, Nguyen Huy Thanh, Truong Trong Do, Nguyen Thuy Ngan and Luong Thi Hoa.
Wushu artist Nguyen Mai Phuong secured the last ticket for Vietnam in the taolu (performance) category, adding up to a total of five spots for that event. The remaining three slots are reserved for the shanshou (fighting) category.
With eight players, Vietnam has achieved the maximum quota to contend in the sport at the Olympic Games.
According to Olympics’ organisation board, Wushu has 15 events for competition.
