Vietnamese judo artist Tran Van Doat won the gold medal in the men's under-66kg event at the International Judo Tournament in Macao last weekend.

This was Vietnam's first gold medal of the tournament, and will inspire the other Vietnamese artists in the year's first international competition.

Doat, who won two gold medals at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam in 2003 and in the Philippines last December, scored one waza-ari, one yoko and one koka point to beat his Japanese opponent in full time.

Nguyen Tran Minh Nhat from HCM City bagged a bronze medal in the men's 73kg category.

The tournament opened last Saturday and has drawn 181 artists from 17 countries and territories to compete in 16 men's and women's weight categories.

Vietnam can add one more gold medal to the final tally when Van Ngoc Tu competes on the mat in the women's under-48kg event.

The tournament's organising committee will apply the "golden score system" to determine the winner in the semi-finals and final.
