VietNamNet – Nguyen Thanh Vinh, former coach of the Song Lam Nghe An Football Club has provided disturbing details about the club’s rise to become league champions during the 2000-2001 season.
On January 4th, former coach of the Pjico-Song Lam Nghe An Club, Nguyen Huu Thang complied with a police summons and met with authorities. Meanwhile, in his meeting with police, another former coach of the team, Nguyen Thanh Vinh, provided extensive new details regarding the match-fixing scheme that helped the Song Lam Nghe An Club become league champions during the 2000-2001 football season.
It has come to light that before a match between Song Lam Nghe An and the HCM City Police Team in the last round of the 2000-2001 season, coach Nguyen Huu Thang negotiated a deal in which the HCM City Police Team agreed to throw the game in exchange for 65 million VND. By winning the match 4-3, Song Lam Nghe An became the first champions of Vietnam’s professional football league.
Investigators have collected extensive evidence of Huu Thang’s match-fixing activities, of which the match with the HCM City Police Team was only a part.
Thang still stays in Hanoi to work with police, where he faces the possibility of prosecution.
