The sweet smell of cardamon harvesting in Lao Cai
12:31' 01/11/2009 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – Dao, H’mong and Ha Nhi people in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai are now harvesting cardamon.

Cardamon develops and yields fruit under a leafy canopy of trees in natural forests in the mountainous districts of Lao Cai, Lai Chau, Ha Giang, Yen Bai and Son La provinces.

In Vietnam it’s not only a valuable spice for cooking – it’s also used in traditional medicines.

Lao Cai currently has nearly 3,000 hectares of cardamon, the largest area in the north western region, yielding 250kg per hectare on average. The price for one kilo of dried cardamon at home is 65,000 VND/kg and around 120,000 VND/kg in Yunnan, China.

Cardamon is an important source of income for many families in Lao Cai. For some it provides a meager living while for others it has built a sizeable fortune.
