VietNamNet Bridge – Project investors have asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to allocate sufficient capital to ensure the first phase of a HCM City flood-prevention project will be completed on schedule.
The VND10 trillion (US$560 million) first phase scheduled to be finished by 2012 includes 12 tide control culverts, including Muong Chuoi, Thu Bo, Kinh Lo, Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe and the Kinh River.
Construction of a new dyke system on the Sai Gon River and nine main irrigation routes in HCM City and Long An Province are also part of the first phase.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Dao Xuan Hoc said apart from State budget funds, relevant agencies and project investors could seek alternative finances to speed up the project.
The ministry's Irrigation Construction and Investment Management Unit No 9 is the investor of three of the culverts.
According to the latest statistic from the city's Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control, the city has a total of 86 areas which are regularly flooded by heavy rain and high tides.
Binh Chanh District is the worst hit with seven flood-prone areas, followed by districts 2, Thu Duc and Phu Nhuan with six areas each.
District 1 has five areas that are regularly flooded, in wards of Pham Ngu Lao, Cau Ong Lanh, Co Giang, Nguyen Thai Binh and Nguyen Cu Trinh.
