Vietnam's population number more than 87 million. | VietNamNet Bridge - Thirty officials of the United Nations (UN) will help monitor Vietnam’s population and housing census to be carried out from April 1-15.
Thirty staff from the UN’s women’s, children’s and population funds, plus UN Volunteers, will join monitoring activities in 21 province and cities during the census. This is the first time the UN will help Vietnam monitor a census.
The monitoring trips aims to advocate for and reinforce the importance of a national census, UN Resident Co-ordinator in Vietnam John Hendra said.
According to Hendra, this will encourage more efforts and resources to be made available by government authorities at all levels, thereby helping to ensure the quality and success of the census.
"Supporting the 2009 census is a key priority for the UN as it will provide the government with the detailed information required to undertake more robust socio-economic development planning for the next 10 years," Hendra said.
The UN Population Fund (UNFPA) will contribute US$3 million to the total cost of the census, which is around $33 million. The census results will be announced in the third quarter of 2010.
UNFPA’s representative Bruce Campbell said that this year’s census will provide major information and data which can help UNFPA better assist Vietnam in designing and implementing development programmes.
“Many people think that investment in such a census is costly but the expenditures are low in comparison with other countries in the region. If we build development programmes based on inaccurate data, it is more costly,” said Campbell.
Among UN organisations in Vietnam, the UNFPA will play the key role in the assistance programme for the census. UNFPA will participate in the planning, question designing, testing, rehearsal, training, supervision and media activities. After the census closes, UNFPA will assist Vietnam in analysis and announcing the data.
Vietnam has, since 1975, carried out three national population censuses: in 1979, 1989 and 1999.
