VietNamNet Bridge – Over 20% of the total laborers of 461 companies that have submitted their labor reports for 2008 to the HCM City Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, have lost their jobs, equivalent to over 35,000 people.

HCM City has more than 100,000 companies of all kinds. Of 2,000 companies that are requested to submit their labor reports in 2008, just 461, which used over 170,000 workers, have fulfilled this task.

These firms have reported to have lost 35,000 workers in 2008 due to their narrowed production scale or after they completed their projects. Labor-intensive sectors such as garments-textile, footwear, dying, construction and electronic assembly had great labor transition.

Specifically, twenty one garments-textile, leather and footwear, and wood processing companies went bankrupt, resulting in 6,000 unemployed workers. Of this number, South Korean-invested firms accounted for 38%, Vietnam 14.28%, China, Taiwan and Hong Kong 14.28%, and the remaining belonged to the US, Norway, and France. Fifty companies lost 4,544 workers due to restructuring.

The city satisfied over 80% of the need for workers in 2008. Some companies had to hire foreigners as high-ranking managers in the finance, banking and tourism sectors.

In 2008, the city’s workforce numbered 4.6 million and over 3 million worked in companies of all economic sectors.
