Bridge – The local Department of Health on April 13 decided to close several restaurants in the two districts of Hoan Kiem and Hai Ba Trung which don’t meet standards on food hygiene and safety.

As a cholera epidemic is spreading, local authorities are trying to control food hygiene.

Le Anh Tuan, Director of the Hanoi Department of Health, said Hanoi has 16,000 street food establishments and only 40% of them have received certificates for meeting food hygiene standards. The official said the agency will tighten control of food hygiene and restaurants that don’t meet standards will be immediately closed.

Hanoi has recorded more than 800 acute diarrhea cases, including 44 cholera patients so far. The epidemic seems to be slowing down in the capital city but has spread to many other provinces, numbering 18 provinces and cities now.

In an urgent dispatch released on April 13, Deputy Minister of Health Cao Minh Quang asked provinces and cities to quickly check street food establishments to grant food hygiene certificates for up-to-standard units and close others.
