VietNamNet Bridge – The oil tanker Duc Tri upturned off the coast of Binh Thuan Province. Ten sailors are missing and over 1,700 tons of oil is threatening to spread along the southern coast.

The ship was on its way from HCM City to the central city of Da Nang when it capsized at 10.30pm on March 2. The ship was discovered off the Binh Thuan coast, around 10 miles from Binh Thuan’s Lagi town and 80km from the southern province of Ba Ria - Vung Tau’s Nghinh Phong Cape.

Of 11 sailors on Duc Tri, ten are missing; one was rescued by a fishing boat. The ship is now back afloat.

According to the Deputy Director of the Southern Oil Spill Control Center, Trinh Vu Anh, 30 tons of the total 1,700 tons of FO oil on the ship leaked. Two tracks of oil have appeared, covering around 3.5 square miles.

Deputy Director of Duc Tri Company, the owner of the sunken ship, said this was the biggest in his fleet, built in 2007; this was its first voyage in 2008.

Competent agencies have mobilized several specialized boats to take measures to suck and prevent oil spills from running to southern provinces like Binh Thuan, Ba Ria Vung Tau, HCM City, Ben Tre and Tien Giang.
