Tides erode dykes, 300 houses flooded

VietNamNet Bridge – High tides on the Sai Gon River in the last two days caused 38 sections of dike to collapse, flooding many houses in Thu Duc, Binh Thanh and Cu Chi districts.

Many houses in Thu Duc District's Hiep Binh Phuoc ward are now under one metre of water, with house-hold appliances damaged and dozens of families having to move to safer areas along National Highway 13. Equipment kept outdoors by various companies was also damaged by the water.

Nguyen Nam Hai, deputy chairman of Hiep Binh Phuoc Ward People's Committee, said the flooding blocked road traffic for several hours, disrupted the schedule of a medical clinic and school, and damaged fishing pools and apricot gardens.

Repair work on the dikes began on Monday, Hai added.

Weather forecasters said in addition to the high tides, torrential rains in the upper reaches of Sai Gon and Dong Nai rivers would cause flooding in parts of the outlying districts of Thu Duc, 12 and Hoc Mon.

The city's Steering Committee for Storm and Flood Control told the Dau Tieng Water Conservancy Company that it should not discharge excess water in the Dau Tieng reservoir from November 24-29.

Phu Yen high tides

High tides on the rivers of Tuy An Song Cau in the south central province of Phu Yen caused 50 houses to collapse and sank 11 fishing vessels.

According to local weather officials, high tides were likely to rise soon, and local authorities in the districts were continuing to evacuate people living in high-risk areas.

Trinh Xuan Son, deputy head of transport management of the Khanh Hoa Road Construction and Management Company, said the two-way lanes across Ca Pass have been blocked by huge rocks that had fallen on the road. The road will be open to traffic in at least four days.
