A gala to raise funds for the construction of cultural community centres for the Van Kieu and Pa Co ethnic minorities in central Quang Tri Province will be held in Hanoi early next year, the Global Community Service Foundation (GCSF) has said.
The Adopt-A-Village gala slated for Sofitel Metropole on January 18 is expected to raise about 100,000 USD to support the construction of eight cultural community houses and pre-school complexes in Da Krong District, helping preserve their cultures as well as improve their living conditions.
The event has been initially supported and sponsored by People’s Aid Coordinating Committee (PACCOM), Incombank, Vinatex, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund and Catholic Relief Services. The GCSF built its first cultural community centre in Spanr village, Quang Tri Province, in 2004.
The Van Kieu ethnic minority mainly live in central Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces while the Pa Co is one of three groups of the Ta Oi ethnic minority concentrating in Quang Tri Province. Culture community centres play a central role in the daily life of these groups.
Ministry of Public Security police investigators have uncovered an online money trading ring that has swindled close to 20,000 investors for 160 billion VND (roughly 10 million USD).
According to the investigation, the Colony Invest scam operated websites colonyinvest.net and callysinvest.com where they offered financial investment services with a utopian interest rate of 3 percent a day.
At a report presented to the General Police Department on November 12, the police issued a legal proceeding against three people for their involvement with the website www.callyinvest.com.
The police also took into custody seven others and arrested one for their engagement in the website www.colonyinvest.net.
Continuing with the investigation, the police have cooperated with the authorities in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, the northern provinces of Lang Son, Thai Nguyen and Bac Ninh and the Mekong delta provinces of Dong Thap, Tien Giang and Ben Tre to break up the “Colony” ring’s centipede-foot-shaped networks.
Army units, especially those from Military Zones 4 and 5 have taken part in the rescue work and evacuating people from flood-prone areas in central provinces.
Border forces in Quang Nam , Da Nang , Thua Thien-Hue and Quang Ngai provinces have sent 858 soldiers and 25 ships to rescue flood victims. They helped move 1,000 households with a total of nearly 4,320 people in Cam Kim commune to safe places in Hoi An township (Quang Nam Province).
Hundreds of soldiers and officers equipped with canoes, vehicles and information equipment from Military Zones 4 and 5 have cooperated with provincial military commands in rescue and preventing floods.
According to the Viet Nam Maritime Rescue Centre, a 1,000-tonne ship, named An Lu 09 with 11 crewmen on board, on November 11 sent out SOS signals on its in way from Quang Ninh to Ho Chi Minh City. It was rescued by China’s rescue force on Nov. 11.
