VietNamNet Bridge – Ngo Thai Duc has developed a technology based system for substantially increasing the success of pig farms.
With help of Dr. Nguyen Hoai Chau of the Institute of Environmental Technology who has developed machines that create javelle water for the cleaning of pig cages and also an ingestable water-based slop for pig feeding, Duc has implemented an advanced system for maintaining and increasing agricultural output.
Two machines have been developed by Chau for the prevention of diseases among livestock populations; the cleaning of machinery, air and materials; and an efficient feed production method.
One is cheaper and is used solely for cleaning cages. The other is more expensive and is capable of providing all the above mentioned services.
Priced at VND5mil (US$300) and VND10mil (US$600) the machines use about VND8,000 (US$0.5) per day of electricity.
Duc's farm maintains over 500 pigs and sells 100 every month at VND20,000 (US$1.25) per kilogram; grossing about VND40mil (US$2,500) per month.
He also utilises a scientific farm design to improve efficiency standards and maintain sanitary conditions, it keeps the summer months cool and the winter months warm using ventilation systems and manages muck and waste water with a sewage treatment system that directs it into biogas pits.
With investment capital of VND1bil (US$62,500), Duc has a farm covering 4ha and it has produced diverse, prosperous results with shaddock, lemon and longan trees in bloom and ready for harvest.
Technology has enabled Duc to create a healthy, successful agricultural system. Disease has been greatly reduced and the food resources are unthreatened by the health concerns facing many Southeast Asian farmers.
"I was successful. It was because I applied advanced technology and received the help of my friends," Duc said. Many farms surrounding Hanoi had the potential for success but were incapable of producing the results of Duc's agrarian project.
"I hope this model can be applied across the entire country," Duc said.
