VietNamNet Bridge - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on August 3 issued a directive on preparation for the national census scheduled for April 1, 2009.

The outcomes of the census will provide basis for the assessment of implementation of the Party and State’s policies and programmes in the 2000-2010 period and the building of a socio-economic development plan for the following decade.

Ministries, agencies and the People’s Committees of all levels are asked to complete all preparations, including trial surveys, by the second quarter of next year.

The Ministry of Planning and Investment acts as the key agency, co-ordinating with relevant ministries and agencies including the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance and the People’s Committees, in preparations for the national census.

The Finance Ministry is responsible for estimating and preparing for the costs of the census.

According to the Statistics Law, a national census is carried out every ten years. The previous national census was carried out on April 1, 1999.
