Bridge - The Family Health International (FHI) has pledged to cooperate with Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Health in the prevention of and the fight against HIV/AIDS from now to 2010.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) on “HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Treatment Programme in Vietnam” was signed in Ha Noi on July 10 between Dương Quoc Trong, Director General of Vietnam Administration of HIV/AIDS Control and Stephen Mills, Director of FHI Vietnam.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister of Public Health Trinh Quan Huan stressed the significance of the cooperation, which he said will contribute to helping Vietnam carry out its National Strategy on HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control in order to cut the HIV prevalence rate among the general population to below 0.3 percent by 2010 and with no further increase after 2010, as well as to reduce the adverse impact of HIV/AIDS epidemic on socio-economic development.

FHI Vietnam Director Stephen told a Vietnam News Agency reporter on the sidelines of the ceremony that many activities will be implemented under the cooperation between the FHI and the Ministry of Public Health, including efforts to prevent the deadly disease and provide care and treatment services for HIV/AIDS patients in Ha Noi, Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, An Giang, Khanh Hoa and Nghe An.

Stephen added that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) will give financial support for the his organisation’s activities in Vietnam and as scheduled, this year’s funding is likely to be 6.2 million USD.

According to William Slater, Director of HIV/AIDS Office of USAID in Vietnam , the financial support is under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief which selected Vietnam as one of its focus countries.

The FHI began working with the Ministry of Public Health since 1998 through the project of “HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care in Vietnam” which lasted until 2006.

By the end of June 2007, Vietnam reported over 128,000 people infected with HIV, including 25,000 living with AIDS and 14,000 deaths from the disease
