VietNamNet – The Ministry of Public Security on July 26 reported that 6,000 prisoners would be granted special reprieve in celebration of National Day (Sept. 2).

Major-general Pham Duc Chuan, Director of the Prison Management Agency, said that prisoners who have served at least half of their sentence would be considered for early release.

Life-sentence prisoners, whose sentences have been reduced to 20 years, of which at least 14 years has been served, will also be considered for reprieve.

For special consideration, prisoners must have served at least one third of their sentence; or for life-sentence prisoners, a minimum of 12 years served and their sentence already reduced.

Mr Chan said that of more than 35,000 prisoners who had their sentences commuted in 2004-2005, over 23,000 now have stable jobs.
