14 people died by food poisoning

VietNamNet – The Ministry of Health on July 6 reported to the Prime Minister on the results of its “Month for food quality, hygiene and safety 2006”, a period in which 14 people died.

 

During this month, the ministry investigated 146,352 food processing establishments of the 180,238 registered throughout the nation. Some 121,111 (73.3%) of establishments met the standards for food hygiene and safety.

 

Inspectors identified 19,636 establishments breaking food quality regulations, meting out fines to 2,010 enterprises. The fines totalled more than VND1.12bil. Other activities included seizure and destruction of products from 1,233 establishments, and forced closure of 117 others. Of 489 canteens examined at companies and organizations, 476 met food standards, accounting for 97%.

 

In this month, 22 large scales food poisoning instances were reported, with a total of 534 victims. Fourteen people died. There were four cases with at least 50 victims each.
