VietNamNet - A number of socio-economic development and cultural exchange programmes have been specially designed over the past years for the ethnic minority people.

The information was affirmed by the Committee of Nationalities at a conference held in Hanoi on July 7.

During the first six months of this year, various cultural exchanges were organised during festivals of ethnic minority groups in different parts of the country.

In the Central Highlands, a ceremony was held to celebrate the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation's (UNESCO) recognition of the Gong Culture as an intangible cultural heritage of human beings.

The conference also emphasised that ethnic minority people still faced many difficulties in their lives and suffered from theaftermaths caused by natural calamities and epidemics.

It praised provinces and cities that had programmes to assist poor people such as Son La province, benefiting 14,300 persons, Yen Bai, 26,500, Cao Bang, 47,000, and Thanh Hoa, 84,500.
