VietNamNet – Nutrition Institute: over 300,000 Vietnamese children seriously malnourished.

According to the Nutrition Institute’s 2001-2005 report, in Vietnam nearly 1.8mil children are under-standard weight and 2mil under-standard height.

The ratio of malnourished children in remote and mountainous areas is higher than in lowland areas, and notably, over one third of children in the Central Highlands are malnourished.

According to the World Bank (WB), malnutrition has caused Vietnam’s gross domestic product (GDP) to drop by 5%.

In the past five years, over VND200bil (US$12.5mil) was allocated to the country’s nutrition strategy; however, the program could not cover all villages in the country with 7mil children and 1.2mil pregnant women.

In Vietnam, an allowance of just $0.45/ child/year is allocated, compared to $10/child/year in most countries in Southeast Asia.
