VietNamNet Bridge – Viet Nam could reduce the mortality rate of children under the age of five much sooner than its target date, said Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Dung made the statement at a meeting with General Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) Margaret Chan during his visit to Geneva, Switzerland, where he was attending the annual World Economic Forum.

Dung said with proper policies and measures, Viet Nam had recorded considerable achievements recently.

Viet Nam had positively fostered international co-operation at the WHO's international and regional conferences.

The country's efforts to fight the A/H5N1 flu have been acknowledged by the world community. The country has also been selected to organise a ministerial conference on the A/H5N1 flu in April this year.

Dung lauded the WHO's role in co-ordinating a global response to health issues.

He also thanked the organisation's leader for supporting Viet Nam in fighting epidemics and diseases, improving the quality of health check-ups, creating policies and training staff in both professional skills and management.

Dung asked the organisation to continue to support Viet Nam and help improve its human resources capacity, technology and strengthen the country's capacity to cope with epidemics.

Margaret Chan applauded the achievements Viet Nam made in the past and affirmed that the WHO would further support the country in needed fields.

On the same day, he also met with staff of the Vietnamese Embassy in Geneva.

At the meeting, he praised the efforts made by the mission to establish and run the embassy, which has helped foster relations between Viet Nam and the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation.

He said the mission had positively participated in world issues and contributed to peace in the world, while also heightening Viet Nam's position in the world arena.
