Golf courses ‘a waste of land’

In cases where rice-growing land has been earmarked for golf projects, only less fertile land is allowed and the area of rice land must be less than 5 percent of the total area of the golf course.

Land for industrial zones, urban areas and forest land is also banned from using for golf courses.

In addition, the time needed for building a golf course must be less than four years, after the investors win licences.

The PM also said that the draft decision must clearly point out that land granted for golf courses must not be used to build houses and villas.

The PM also insisted state capital must not be used to build golf projects, except for public golf courses.

According to the Ministry of Construction’s Urban Development Agency, golf course project account for large areas of land, from 80 to 700 hectares and most of them partly use agricultural land.

However, he said in some projects, just 30 percent of the land area allocated to projects is used for golf courses and the remaining is used for building villas and hotels.
