VietNamNet Bridge – The Government Inspectorate will probe Hanoi’s water drainage project, said Assistant Chief Government Inspector Mai Quoc Binh on Thursday.

As Hanoi is still seriously flooded, the public has questioned about the effect of Hanoi’s water drainage project, which was invested with millions of US dollars.

“The Government Inspectorate shares the flood victims’ difficulties. We wonder about the feasibility of this project (water drainage project),” Binh said.

Binh said next year, the agency will probe construction investment management, financial, credit and equalization at State-owned enterprises, and land management. Inspection will focus on environment, particularly water, air pollution and food hygiene.

Hanoi’s water drainage project will be inspected besides some other projects which were invested by State capital. Inspectors will consider the use of capital, the construction procedure, and the effectiveness of this project to define whether there is a loss of investment capital.

Binh said in October 2008, 541 inspection cases were conducted, unveiling violations related to VND 37 billion (US $2.17 million) and over 450ha of land. Two cases will be transferred to police for criminal handling. The Government Inspectorate alone finalized the inspection of 11 projects.

The Hanoi’s first-phase water drainage project was completed at a cost of around US $130 million, aiming to solve the problem of flooding caused by rains of 177mm rainfall after two days.
