Vietnam calls for stability in Congo

VietNamNet Bridge - Viet Nam has applauded the efforts of a UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) to disarm and assimilate rebel soldiers and carry out projects to help the Congolese Government.

Speaking at a UN Security Council meeting on the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday, Vietnamese Representative to the UN Security Council, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, said there was still concern over possible instability in Kivu.

The Ambassador called on the Congolese government to continue developing measures to protect its citizens and co-ordinating with MONUC to ensure stability.

He urged relevant parties to implement commitments reached at the Kivu Conference in January 2008 and to hold elections on schedule.

The ambassador said it was necessary to work out a comprehensive solution to the Congo security issue by increasing dialogue and building trust between Congo and its neighbouring nations, including Rwanda, in the spirit of last year’s Nairobi Declaration.
