Thanksgiving in Hanoi
22:31' 02/12/2004 (GMT+7)

TGL – When the old country festivities roll around, it can be tricky to find the foods required. Some substitution and make do may be required.

Absent again, turkey failed the taste test.

Animal, Mineral or Vegetable:

Actually, Thanksgiving is a festival. That means it is a mineral, as traditions are the salt of the earth. Prior to this review, none of the TGL staff had ever celebrated it, passing it over as “that thing Americans have for turkeys”.

Position on the periodic table of foodstuffs:

The foodstuffs table was well covered. There were several cakes, mountains of spring rolls and several rice based dishes. This fine fare was served with a side of many, many apologies that there was no turkey.

Atomic weight:

Depends on the angle you view it from. Those who celebrate this tradition take it very seriously, enough that small nations that don’t celebrate it are often reminded of atomics and their subsequent deployment to ensure the holiday is respected. Inside every other culture is a thanksgiving waiting to be celebrated.

On the other hand, strong-arm tactics don’t carry much weight.

Description:

Thanksgiving in Hanoi was a rainy day. Several different parties had been organised around the town, and one poor lad, drenched and lost in the Ho Tay area accepted a ride form a TGL reporter in return for a commentary on Thanksgiving.

“It’s like, when the white settlers ‘thank’ the Native Americans for ‘giving’ them all that land.” He said, shivering on the back of the bike.

Celebrating traditional holidays far from home can often be a reminder that one is far from family and friends. With Xmas on the horizon, the search for traditional fare or appropriate replacements is on once again.

Chicken can replace Turkey, and ham is easily sourced. Many restaurants, particularly the top end establishments, import the right trimmings.

Inert with:

Those who can rise to the occasion wherever they are, and celebrate the diversity of different countries by realising that the absence of turkey is a sign of change in themselves.

Reacts with:

Those who can’t use their imagination to pretend chicken is turkey.
