Caning the goodness

TGL – Nature thoughtfully made an energy drink long before all those neon coloured cans started promising to recharge your batteries. Mia da will keep you rolling, without any caffeine rocking.

Sugarcane: not a convenient snack.

Animal, Mineral or Vegetable:

Purely vegetable, apart from the ice, which is made from water and nobody knows what water really is. It’s just good.

Position on the periodic table of foodstuffs:

Liquidus energerium, impurities are sometimes present, usually due to dirty production equipment. Whatever doesn’t kill you, will only make you stronger.

Atomic weight:

It comes in big long sticks, which are more than a little unwieldy. Also you need a big knife and a huge metal press. Not really the kind of snack you want to carry around in your bag. Instant powdered drinks really are a lot simply.

Description:

Crunched from the same cane that sugar comes from with a big clothes ringer thing, mia da gets a little ice treatment before being placed on a plastic table on the side of the road. Coming as it does from sugarcane, it has high sugar content (yes, really), which will give you a perk when you need it.

It’s readily available in the summertime, then disappears over winter when everyone huddles back inside warm cafes drinking tea. It’s a simple idea; take your cane, chop all the nasty tasting purple bark off it with a hacking knifey motion, then pass it through a ringer crusher thing a few times. The dripping sap is your tasty reward, chuck some ice in it and water it down a bit, and you have natural energy drink.

One problem is the number of utensils you need to make it. All up for a cup of refreshing drink, you need around 4000 pounds of utensils and material. Better to go find someone who is making it. Of course this uses energy. Some people have been known, as the summer months fade and mia da gets harder to find, to only have enough energy to get from one stall to the next. In winter they hibernate in tall trees.
