VietNamNet – The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has picked its 22 team-members to square off against the Republic of Korea for the World Cup 2006 qualifier match on June 9. Notably absent is number-one striker and Golden Ball winner, Pham Van Quyen.

Striker Pham Van Quyen.

Chief Coach E. Tavares decided to drop Quyen and four other players from the initial 26-member list after poor performance in recent V-League matches. They will be on the pine as reserve-players.

Mr Tavares’ elimination of Quyen, the footballer who shot the victory goal in the Asian qualifier match against RoK last year, is a surprise move. He made the decision based on Quyen’s poor performance in recent matches, especially his lacklustre showing in the match against LG.HN.ACB at Hang Day Stadium.

The VFF has agreed to withdraw Coach Nguyen Thanh Vinh from the training board. As a result, Chief Coach Tavares will have three assistants: Pham Van Hung, Huynh Van Anh and Nguyen Van Hiep.

The national football squad will come together on May 31 at National Sports Training Centre No. 1 in Hanoi before travelling to RoK for the third World Cup 2006 qualifier match.
