VietNamNet Bridge – HCM City-based Huynh Hai Long won the Grand Prix at the Viet Nam Collection 2009 fashion event on Saturday in Ha Noi.
His collection Vuot Vu Mon, which uses varied materials including leather, velvet, cotton and netting to depict large phoenix-flowers in red on a white background, also earned him the New Colour prize.
Long, surprisingly, is not a professional designer but a graduate of the HCM City College of Theatre and Cinema’s Drama Department.
Other awards on Saturday evening went to Ha Noi-based Nguyen Manh Hao (Designer of the Year and New Impression) and Vo Thi Quynh Nhu (New Designer and New Discovery).
Nhu will get a scholarship to study in Japan, awarded by Japanese designer Koshino Junko who was a jury member for the Viet Nam Collection Grand Prix several years ago.
This year was the 11th Viet Nam Collection Grand Prix. It was sponsored by garment maker Vinatex and the Viet Nam Fashion Design Institute. The contest was judged by international experts from France, the US, Japan, the UK, South Korea, China, Thailand and Viet Nam, who evaluated a group of 20 finalists, down from a peak of 30 in earlier years of the Grand Prix.
The 20 finalists, all from the two leading cities of Ha Noi and HCM City, beat out nearly 1,500 others with 11,000 designers to appear at the awards ceremony on Saturday in Quan Ngua Sport Palace in the capital.
This year’s collection looked very fresh, creative and well-shaped, said judge Francine Pairon.
The 20 finalists will be scouted to work as designers by leading national garment makers such as Garment 10, Viet Tien, Phuong Dong Co and Hanosimex.
