Thuy (middle) and her “Quietness” painting. | VietNamNet Bridge - A painting exhibition by a deaf-and-dumb student, Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy, 18, opened on May 9 at the English Institute, University of Da Nang. The exhibition will close on May 30.
Thuy is a resident at the Hy Vong Village for Disadvantaged Children. She was born in a family with three children in a poor commune in the central province of Quang Ngai. She is the youngest child. At the age of five, she was sent to the Hy Vong Village for Disadvantaged Children, where she learnt painting.
“I felt Thuy’s talent in the first class,” said Thuy’s teacher at Hy Vong Village. In 2003, the girl won a consolation prize in a painting contest supported by the Southeast Asian Sports Games for the Disabled (Paragames 2003) and the third prize in a painting contest to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Da Nang’s Liberation in 2005.
Over 30 paintings by the disabled girl are now on display at the exhibition, which tells viewers about Thuy’s life.
