Vietnam will for the first time send war-era movies such as Virgin Field and Hanoi Girl to an international film festival.

The films will make their festival debut at the Jeonju international film festival in the Republic of Korea (RoK) from May 1-9.

Other films on the programme feature Vietnam , its people and land after the war ended such as “Crazy Sister Nam” and “Roads toward Justice”.

Festival Programme Director Woo Un-seong says Koreans show a lot of interest in stories from Vietnam.

“RoK people know about the war in Vietnam largely from US-made movies, mostly action movies,” Un-seong said.

“This is for the first time that traditional films produced during the wartime by Vietnamese directors, actors and actresses themselves will be screened in this special event.”

The local filmmakers featured in the festival say they hope their films will help change Vietnam’s image in the eyes of RoK audiences who are only used to seeing western movies about the country such as “Indochina” or other US movies.
