Jewelry made of mollusk shells unearthed in Dong Trong Cave

VietNamNet Bridge – The Vietnam Archaeology Institute and Quang Ninh province have excavated Dong Trong Cave in Cai Rong town, Van Don district and discovered many vestiges of prehistoric people.

Archaeologists excavated tombs in Dong Trong Cave and found many pots, jars, human and animal bones. They also collected many grindstones and some pieces of pottery at the cave door. These are remains of the Ha Long culture and the cave was the home of prehistoric Ha Long men.

In Dong Trong Cave II, scientists dug a small hole of 4sq.m and they discovered mollusk shells, animal teeth, stone-made, bone-made, pottery products and jewelry made of mollusk shells. These are unique products of the Ha Long culture, which existed nearly 4,000 years ago.

Archaeologists said the Ha Long culture was the first group of people living in Vietnam’s northeast coastal region. They engaged in extensive fishing and planting.

The excavation is underway in the cave.
