Bridge - Over the past ten years, people in the Central province of Quang Tri have discovered many jars of ancient coins from different dynasties while working the land or building houses, said the director of the provincial museum, Le Duc Tho.

“An ancient coin can tell many things about history, such as events dynasties, the honour or dishonour of families, even the philosophy of a nation. But first of all, ancient coins are the mark of economic development,” said Mr.Tho.

In the north of the province, in the 17th century, there was Mai Xa Thi port in Gio Linh district, and the Hieu river was considered a blood line in transportation for convenient trade with markets including Van Tuong, Ai Lao and Cam Lo. In the south of the province, Hoi quarter in Ha Tay village had Cua Viet port and branches of a river running through the mainland.

Boats from foreign countries landed here and brought coins to buy goods. Ancient copper coins were usually very heavy. Therefore, businessmen often used jars made in famous pottery villages in Quang Tri such as Phuoc Tich, Phuoc L or, Sa Lung in the 15th to 17th century to put the coins in.

This explains why ancient coins are often discovered in this land. The coins have helped to reveal the values of an ancient culture.
