Jamaican drummer promises to return
Talking with Vietnamese reporters on the occasion of his first performance ever in Vietnam at Sheraton Hotel on September 14, world-renowned drum artist Steve Thornton said he thought very highly of Vietnamese audiences and their love and knowledge of music.
“In the future, I will return to stay here for 1 week, 10 days or even longer,” said he. He added that he also planned to organise a conference on drums in the country as well as to research Vietnamese tapping instruments.
“I also want to visit Vietnam as a tourist,” said he, who admires Vietnamese artisans’ skills very much and wishes some day to personally visit traditional profession villages throughout the country.

Dong Son drum discovered in Quang Binh
The Quang Trach District Police has recently discovered and confiscated several antiques from illegal antique traders including a Dong Son drum still in its original condition.
The drum is 1.3 kg in weight and 9.8 cm in height and has characteristic Dong Son drum designs. The provincial museum is currently keeping the drum.

French centre to open installment art exhibition
An installment art exhibition titled Paris-Hanoi / Hanoi-Paris by 9 students from Paris University of Fine Arts as well as professor Jean Luc Vilmouth will be held from October 11-25 at the French Culture Centre, L’ Espace in Hanoi.
The exhibition will showcase works capturing French students’ experiences in Vietnam.

Book writing contest kicked off
A contest titled The Book of My Lifetime has recently been started by the French Culture Centre in HCM City, Idecaf as part of the Book Reading Festive Day held annually in France and 100 other countries worldwide to extol book reading and works of literature.
The contest is open to all. Submissions on important books of literature can be written in English or Vietnamese and sent to Idecaf before September 22. 12 essays will be selected and read on October 19.
Besides the contest, the Book Reading Festive Day will also include a reading event titled Ariel Garcia Valdès Reading Modiano’s works on the evening of October 20.

Hue and Gyeongju clinch cultural partnership deal
Hue and the Korean city of Gyeongju have recently signed a deal under which the two sides will work together to preserve and promote cultural heritages, according to the Hue People’s Committee.
The deal is seen as an important step towards the development of comprehensive cultural friendship and cooperation between the two cities.
